Marshall Cousins

The offspring of me, my brother and sister...

Snow Snow Snow

My parents live in a mountain retreat. It was awesome! We were up in the mountains with SO MUCH snow! Utah has been hammered this year. It was awesome being there in the middle of it! My kids could climb the snow banks next to the house and touch the roof! Karsten had a blast shoveling the snow and was in heaven when Papa took him in the truck to plow the driveway. We played in the snow every single day. Papa bribed the grandkids to go down one of the steepest sledding hills I've ever seen. Skyla took the bait. She made it and was the only one to even try! Sierra caught some killer jumps. I became the sole member of the Polar Bear club since I was the only one dumb enough to jump in the snow in my swimsuit and then jump back in the hot tub. Nana always had cookies or hot chocolate (or a hot tub!) waiting.

There's just something about being at my mom's house... All the stress and schedule of life just melted away and I could enjoy my kids and build a snowman and read a book... It was a much needed escape from reality. We even got an extra days of it since there were snow storms when we were trying to get home.

Thank you Nana and Papa!!!

Sister Time

I love my sister! We are five years apart which growing up was a pretty big gap and we fought quite a bit. My mom used to get after us and say "You are sisters! You're suppose to be best friends!" Well, that wasn't quite possible when I was 16 and she was 11, but the age difference has melted away and she really is my best friend. I had so much fun hanging out with her and her two cute boys this week.

Winter Wonderland

Thirteen hours of driving, one traffic ticket, several pee stops, a broken DVD player, and lots of empty calories consumed to try and stay awake, and we made it to our winter break destination... Yeah! The joy of the kids seeing family has made the pain of the trip melt away. And boy do we love the snow!!! We've been taking advantage of the massive amounts of snow Utah got this winter. It's amazing! Skyla started collecting icicles to bring back to show everyone in California. Aunt Melissa tried to convince her that maybe taking a picture would be better... We've spent a couple of days at Grandma and Grandpa's (David's parents) where the girls perfected their Wii abilities with their uncles, made cookies and went sledding with aunt Chrissy, and celebrated Savannah's first birthday (my niece is so adorable!). Uncle Geoff was even giving cartwheel lessons for free! Thank you Grandma and Grandpa for warm hugs, fun stories, and special treats. We love you!

The Ultimate Valentine's Day

Meet the newest member of our family...

WE'RE GETTING A DOG! Sierra hasn't stopped smiling. (Check out her blog http://www.sierrahymas.blogspot.com/ and look at the cocker spaniel comments to see how she found out...) Skyla was literally hypervenelating.

She's the cutest little dog I've ever seen. David has officially won "Dad of the Year". (Especially since he's letting us
keep the iguana too...) It's so unexpected and exciting!!! We have always said we're not getting a dog while we're here but this little dog just stole our hearts! It's the same kind of dog David had growing up. I told him it was a sign that we needed that dog and he replied, "Yeah, a sign from the devil." :) But look at his smile (he's holding the one we're getting) and you know he's all talk. The puppy is just 4 weeks old now, so two more weeks! The girls are never, ever going to forget this Valentine's Day.

Meet Guana

David came home to quite a surprise on Tuesday... We adopted an iguana. Karsten has named him Guana and we're sure he's going to be a perfect fit in our family... if we can all get over our fear of him. So far Sierra has been the only one brave enough to get him out of his aquarium and Skyla will hold him once he's out (after she puts on a thick sweater.) He's cute. No really, he is...

David's only request is that next time we adopt a living thing that it be a joint decision...

Super Tuesday

I am not a political person. I am registered independent. But there is something magical happening and I am so excited and proud to be a part of it. This is the first election where I have actually cared about who is running and I even want to stand on the corner waving my sign encouraging people to vote. Today on the way to school we passed the polling center at the library so I took the girls in to show them where and how people vote. It's so amazing that we get to vote on who we want to run for President. I'm so proud to be an American.

YES WE CAN!

2.03

On 2/3, I ran my half marathon in 2 hours and 3 minutes. How's that for coincidence... Crazy! Despite the rain (hail?) and strong winds, it was a great run. It winds through San Francisco's Golden Gate Park and several miles along the ocean. That being said, I do hope for sunshine for the next one. :)

Here is a picture of Marianna and I in our many layers before the race smiling despite the gail force winds. Notice the dark storm clouds in the back. Notice the huge waves. What were we thinking!?!

Favorite Day

Today is my favorite day. It's the day before a race which means I get to eat as much carbs as I possibly can. I'm supposed to eat a lot. I'm encouraged to eat a lot. I think it's the real reason I run races. :)
I hope today never ends...

Potty Training

I've been saving this picture for when I could triumphantly announce and tell the great story of how Karsten is now potty trained. But potty training lasted a week and no more. And since I'm going to wait until Karsten can say, "Please let me wear underwear mommy" I figure I better share this picture now because he could be two feet taller by the time he says that... (The third child gets to approach life much differently... :)

There's no better teacher than a good friend. Thanks Owen!

January Recap

The first month of 2008 is OVER! I can't believe it. Here are some things I want to remember that didn't make it in our blog yet:

*Karsten is officially a Sunbeam! He even knows how to jump during the song. It has taken the efforts of the primary presidency, his parents, his sisters, his nursery leaders, and of course his wonderful Sunbeam teacher to get him into the primary room, but he is there (for part of the time) and that is a miracle.

*Five trips to the dentist, Eight teeth sealed, Zero cavities, and only One time of throwing up on the dentist. We can exhale for another 6 months...

*David had his first trip to NYC. He had to go visit a client (you may have heard of it - AOL) and so he got to experience New York by staying 100 feet from Times Square. A trip to NY wouldn't be complete without riding in a taxi, which he did to where the World Trade Center used to be.

*The girls have begun ice skating again!

*Lots and lots of rain...
*Lots and lots of ants...

*The girls had a scrapbook playdate with Adri and Kyla and loved it as much as their moms.

*Sierra gave an exceptional talk in primary and I quote, "I've started reading the Book of Mormon, also called the BOM."

*Two large raccoons involved in adult behavior on our back porch. They did not run away when I knocked on the glass. They did not run away when I ran towards them yelling (although they did stop their adult behavior). At that point I ran away because it's scary to run toward two raccoons that aren't afraid of you.

*This was a great month for reading for me and I read the following books, Heart of Darkness (don't recommend), Ella Minnow Pea (OK), The Book Thief (oh my gosh amazing), and The Incident of the Dog in the Night Time (SO GOOD!). If I got this much reading in, it means it was a bad month work wise for David unless you consider lots and lots of hours good.

*Skyla passed off Rag Time Raggles on the piano - it had given her trouble for weeks and she played it perfectly!

*At the zoo, Sierra and her friend Cody got spit on by the Chimpanzee... twice!

*An attempt at potty training... (See posting above.)
