I seem to remember (and document) the big events in our lives - birthdays, holidays, job changes... But what I want to remember is the little things - the way David and I hold hands, the way Karsten looks with his hands behind his head without a care in the world, Skyla's giggle, and Sierra's ability to block the world when she's reading. So here's to what I want to remember the most... the little moments of our lives that equal a much bigger picture.

Karsten's Bad Day
This was the desired outfit - Karsten's favorite shirt paired with his new favorite shorts. I told him no, it didn't match. He threw a tantrum so I left the room. A few minutes later a heard a loud bang.
This is Karsten's head after he climbed up in his closet to get his favorite shirt that was hanging in the closet. He fell and his head hit the bed frame. The picture doesn't do it justice because that lump is the size of a golf ball.
After the crying stopped (which took at least 10 minutes which is huge because he's one tough kid...) I told him I didn't want him to climb up in his closet anymore. He started crying again. "Well how will I get my shirts then?" That made me want to cry.
This is the lesson that I learned. Who cares if his clothes don't match. He's trying to be big. He's getting dressed by himself! He has his own style. Who am I to get in the way of Karsten's fashion??
And to prove that I learned my lesson, here's what I let my daughter walk out of the house and into the world wearing today...
Mercy.

It's not the outfit, it's the confidence. Skyla can wear anything with that air!!! And little Karsten is too cute for words. I almost wish my kids would get a little bump to teach them not to climb the closets (and take all the clothes off hangers, etc)!
This really made me smile. You have such a great way of writing, I just love reading your blog. Your family is absolutely darling, and YOU are an absolutely darling mom! I love Skyla's outfit, lesson well learned! :)
and...HAPPY ANNIVERSARY! Loved the way you spent your day!
I don't think my girls have worn matching clothes in about 3 years... or worse... my girls love the monochromatic look for some reason. Luckily we live in an area where "anything goes." Gotta love the Bay Area for that! I just tell myself that by letting them express themselves through fashion now, I'm fostering their artistic confidence and that can't be a bad thing, right? Good for you for letting it go. Who wants boring old matching kids, anyway?
It is so hard to take that step of letting them pick out their clothes. I have a hard time, Skyla seems a lot like Sydney.
Poor Karsten! I love his big eyes though! Watch out Mindy, he's going to be a heart breaker.
I think they look fab! Thank heavens for pictures... they will tell a great story when they are 18:)
I liked the first part of this post, where I had evidence to show my kids that I'm not the only mother in the world who prefers that her kids' clothes match.
So I'm not sure I liked the end of the story, and the moral. :) (I do pick my battles, though -- my kids have been seen in public in plenty of ill-matched or dirty ensembles. But I still try to talk them out of it.)
My favorite mismatched outfit is one that a boy in Nathan's class wears routinely:
orange & white striped shirt
dark camouflage shorts
red Crocs
Ouch! Love the outfits! I'm already dealing with this and my little guy isn't even 3. Independence, right.
POOR GUY!!! Aww, I love the lessons we learn from our opinions. I hope that bum has gone away...
