I've been dying to get into yoga and I finally found a class that would work while Karsten is in preschool. It's called "Gentle Yoga" which is perfect because I'm new at yoga and NOT flexible. Well, Marianna and I went today and it turns out that "gentle" actually means "senior citizen." We were the youngest ones there by 30 years. They were a nice group of people and we actually had a good time, but it was a little embarrassing. (This is not a picture of the class - most of the hair there was a little whiter...)
It was really enlightening to me, though, to see how my body is going to change. Simple things like being able to stand against a wall with my arms straight against it was really hard for these folks. It reminded me to not take for granted the way my body moves and works right now. I'm so grateful that I can run and swim and chase my kids around. It may not always be the case...
New outlook on life as well as some good "gentle" stretching - not bad for an afternoon without kids. :)
I seem to remember (and document) the big events in our lives - birthdays, holidays, job changes... But what I want to remember is the little things - the way David and I hold hands, the way Karsten looks with his hands behind his head without a care in the world, Skyla's giggle, and Sierra's ability to block the world when she's reading. So here's to what I want to remember the most... the little moments of our lives that equal a much bigger picture.

Double Tri
I did my very first, and then my second triathlon this weekend! What an amazing experience!
See Jane Tri Triathlon (400 meter swim, 11 mile bike, 3 mile run) Marianna and I joined Jenny and her friend Liesel on this very important event with the proceeds going toward breast cancer research. Jenny has a very good friend in TX who, at the age of 35 is dying from breast cancer. I couldn't believe how nervous I was for this! First of all, the thought of jumping into a lake at 8 in the morning did NOT sound very fun. And it turned out, it wasn't. See this picture? I share it with you NOT to show you how good I look in my swim cap, but do you see all those people in the background? Yeah, we were all swimming together. It was like a shark feeding! Thank goodness the water was actually warm, even if it was black from the mud. Ugh. But I survived the swimming and made good time and then ran around frantically because I couldn't remember where I parked my bike. Not even a GPS would be able to help me with this one. :) I eventually found it after killing some good time and off I went on my bike. Word to those who want to do this: Road bikes go much, much faster than mountain bikes. Eleven miles later I ditched my bike and was on foot. It's amazing how difficult it can be running after bike riding. My legs feel like jello and it felt like I was running so slow, although Marianna's watch confirmed we were running 8 1/2 minute miles! Can you believe the running course included hills?! The nerve... But we finished strong and even managed to sprint across the finish line. I'm so glad to have such good friends who have helped me and inspire me to try and push my physical limits. First flying (see I can fly!), now a triathlon... What's next and I say BRING IT ON!
I really wish I had a picture of my loving family to insert right here but I don't. Anyway, they are awesome! Apparantly it's not fun running around trying to catch of glimpse of me as I run or ride by (the girls informed me of this), but they did it anyway. David and Nathan got the kids up and out the door by 6:45, Sierra gave up a soccer game, and Skyla gave up being in her soccer team picture just to cheer me on. And my little Karsten cheers so loud. He's so proud of me racing. I ran faster knowing they were there. Thanks family!
Albany Centiennial Triathlon (400 meter swim, 8 mile bike, 2 mile run)
So normally after an event, I don't want to wake up the next morning and do another event. But this one was different... It's my town! I swam in the pool where I train and learned that I could in fact swim. I biked and ran around the park where I take my kids on a weekly basis. I was supporting Albany! It was very low key and so much fun! We kept doing loops (15 on the bike and 4 running) around the park and the high school. To keep track of what lap we were on Marianna and I had a bag of candy and after every lap we'd throw a piece out. That's a lot of loops! The really cool thing was we got to compete with our friend Susan Parkinson who took 1st place! She's amazing. She finished her entire thing before we even started running and then waited for us and ran our last lap with us. And while this event was on a Sunday, I'm proud to say that all three of us were there for sacrament meeting which starts at 9:30. I felt like my race continued until I finally made it to church. :)

I can fly!
I really can and I didn't even have pixie dust! Me and some amazing girlfriends went to iFly - an indoor skydiving place for my adrenaline junky friend Kelly's birthday. (You should go to her post to see the good pictures...) Simply put - it was AWESOME!!! I can't even describe it except to say I was flying! I was really flying! It's the most amazing feeling in the world. I can't wait to go back so David can fly. In fact, everyone should fly! We live in a day and age where WE CAN FLY!
Thanks girls for non-stop laughing and fun and FLYING! And Happy Birthday to one truly amazing chick. Dinner before flying

Party on Key Route Blvd!
David and I have been married for 13 years, and this is the first time we have bought a house. That's what moving around every couple of years will do! But we just discovered the biggest pert of home ownership - a block party!!! (Which I realized you don't have to own a house to be a part of a neighborhood, but we've never even lived in a normal neighborhood...) Anyway, our section of Key Route blocked off the street, got a huge jumpy house and we had a party! It was so much fun to mingle with our neighbors and walk in the middle of the street. The firemen even came with a truck and talked with us about safety and then let the kids explore the fire truck and even squirt water from the fire hose!!! Now that's what I call a Par-tee!
I just love Albany. I love how everything is walking distance. We can ride our bikes to school and to Karsten's preschool and to the post office and our favorite ice cream store. If I was really motivated, I could even ride bikes to the grocery store (which I have done a few times, but only in emergencies... :)) I'm pretty sure this is the only place where we will ever live that I will be able to do this - especially with the weather being so great all the time.
We got a great dose of community this month by going to Music in the Park on Wednesdays in September. We would take dinner and meet friends and listen to some great bands. I'm so sad they don't do this longer. There's something about packing up your food and eating it outside that makes it so much more fun. Left - Karsten and Skyla dancing in the park.

Boo Hoo
These are the box seats we get through David's work sometimes. Fancy Shmancy!
We are very sad to see the ending of our beloved Oakland A's season. Saturday was the last home game. We are going to miss singing "Take me out to the ball game", eating peanuts (Karsten smashes them on the side of his chair to get them out - it entertains him for a long time!), guessing which hat the ice cream is hiding under on the large screen during 3rd inning, kettle corn, BOBBLE HEAD night!, and just watching America's favorite pasttime in general. A couple of weeks ago the Dullum's came to a game with us. It was so much fun! Good times are even better with good friends. They are such good friends they didn't even make fun of us for getting there two hours early to get the Jack Cust Bobble head. And how crazy is this - an entire family can come with us and we have enough hats for them to wear.
I LOVE that David has gotten the kids into baseball. He played A LOT growing up and even into college. His Dad used to coach him and it was something special he used to do with HIS dad. The tradition is carried on... And when Uncle Geoff (David's brother) comes to town, they go to baseball games. It's awesome.

Stop Reading!
Can you imagine a parent actually uttering those words? Well, I wish I were just uttering them, but the volume is a little bit louder than that to be considered "utter". Skyla LOVES books. We go to the library and get a huge stack that I think will last her a couple weeks and a couple days later she's asking to go again. I can't keep up with her! We went to the library last week and found a whole new series that she hadn't read and got 10 books. Four days later she was done. So this is all good. The problem is she can't seem to get ready for school! I am getting ready to walk out the door and I look at her reading a book without her hair combed and no shoes on. I know part of it is my fault. I do love a good book. How many times has she seen me curled up with a good book oblivious to the world...

Recognize this woman?
And when I look in the mirror, neither do I!!!
I needed to fix my roots last night so I chose this color which was very similar to the color my hair is (was.) David walked into the bathroom with raised eyebrows last night and I assured him that I was NOT going darker. Just blending... Anyway, I rinsed it out and it looked dark, but it always looks dark wet. I fell asleep before it was dry and woke up to black hair!!! I have colored my hair a million times and only had two, now three bad experiences (Tiger stripes when my sister and I tried a funky way of highlighting, and clumps of hair falling out after highlighting with Marianna...). What happened?! The L'Oreal people told me to wash my hair and it will eventually come out. I've washed it 6 times already today. So instead of jet black, maybe now it is black cat black...
It's just hair, right?!?
Although if David makes one more "Medusa" comment, I'm going to professionally color my hair on a regular basis for the rest of my life! :)

Open Open Open
I fretted for weeks about Karsten starting preschool. He cries when he goes to primary. He cries when he goes to "preschool" at his friend's house. He's definitely a mamma's boy, so how was he going to handle "real" preschool??? As you can see, he wasn't clinging or crying. He was first in line waiting to be let in! He was so excited! He LOVES his teachers. He loves his cubby where he puts his stuff. He loves his new shoes that are for preschool. I picked him up and he ran up and was so proud to tell me "I was so brave! I didn't cry!"
But I did! I can't believe my baby is in preschool!
