Party or Adventure??

As my girls got a little bit older, I started offering "adventures" instead of birthday parties. Last year instead of a birthday party for Sierra we went camping in Yosemite. Skyla chose horseback riding. This year Sierra wanted to try kayaking! And not just any sort of kayaking, but one where she could see wildlife. That could only mean one place - Monterey. So we made it a weekend with the Dullums and had one awesome weekend. I love that my kids want to try new things, and I love getting a break from party planning.

We had the bluest of skies and perfect kayaking conditions. It was so much fun. Karsten and Owen even did some of the paddling. We saw sea otters, harbor seals, and lots of noisy sea lions. Thank you to Marianna who was brave enough to bring her camera out on the water so we could have these pictures. Now the kids will always remember this day!

It was a definite hit with Sierra. Today after school she told me what she wants for Christmas...

A wetsuit and a kayak.

What a great way to celebrate a birthday. I love that you let them choose these fun things. 10 really? Do you remember when I came to visit and she was so mad that I was going to sleep in her bed that she just cried and cried. I happily slept on the couch. She's to cute. I wish we were closer so I could have watched her grow up. Thank goodness for blogs I can at least see fun pictures. Love you.

What a daring family you have! I am such a scardey cat! I had the opportunity to go once, but turned it down because the open water scares me and I also picture "The River Wild"! Yikes! I bet David was happy about doing the "adventure"! We watched the video the other day of him serving "tea" at a "princess" birthday party, instead of watching the football game! :) What a good mom and dad you guys are! LOVE YA!

That is a great idea. I think I might be too scared to take my kids out on the water like that though.
